The redevelopment of the former Stone House Hospital created 130 new homes within a distinctive historic setting, centred around the site's retained chapel.
DHA developed a contemporary architectural response designed to complement rather than compete with the chapel and its richly detailed stonework. The new homes draw subtle inspiration from the proportions, forms, materials and detailing of the historic building, creating a considered relationship between old and new.
Recessed balconies take advantage of views across the development, while the feature use of terracotta blocks provides warmth and texture and creates a further connection with the material character of the chapel.
The result is a simple yet carefully considered architectural approach that allows the historic chapel to remain a focal point while establishing a strong identity for the new residential development.
