The redevelopment of the former Princess Mary Hospital site created 410 new homes within a sensitive landscape setting close to the Chilterns village of Halton.
DHA was appointed following outline consent, where the siting of the development had already been established through an indicative concept masterplan. When developed in greater detail, however, the approved layout presented significant challenges relating to parking, road geometry, residential amenity, garden provision and the practical requirements of individual homes.
Through detailed analysis and close negotiation with the local authority, DHA demonstrated the need to revisit the siting while retaining the principles of the consented masterplan. This enabled the development to be comprehensively replanned to create a practical and deliverable layout for the site.
The architectural approach was informed by the character of the historic village, drawing on its traditional building forms, materials and detailing. Strong urban design principles were used to establish a clear townscape, composition and legibility across the development, creating a new neighbourhood that responds sensitively to its Chilterns setting.
